DRAFT. LETTER

SIR BERNARD GILBERT, K. C.B.,

K.B.E.,

TREASURY.

84

For Sir Thomas Lloyd's signature

Dear Gilbert,

FURTHER ACTION.

Re-establishment of Hong Kong

University

Thank you for your letter of the

(44) 12th September. It is naturally disappointing

to have to abandon all immediate idea of

making progress towards the larger Hong

Kong University, but I note that you would

be prepared to review the project next

Par year. I think I should mentioned for your

information that since my letter to you

(41)

of the 23rd August we have heard from Hong

Kong that substantial contributions might

be forthcoming from Chinese subscriptions

if H.M.G. were to support the scheme of the

larger university, but that we could not

expect much from such sources in the absence

of support from H.M.G.

I am grateful for your assurance that

the decision to defer the university scheme

does not necessarily commit us to the

postponement of other projects.

Yours sincrerely,
